(Via York Press) If you fancy your chances of striking gold this weekend - you might want to buy a lottery ticket or scratch-card from this shop.

One anonymous winner parted with £2 and scooped around £250,000 at a HaxbyRoad newsagent.

Owner Muhbab Ahmed was told this week one lucky customer had scratched their way to the huge prize after buying the game from his Goldmine Mini Market.

The winning card matched symbols to bring home the life-changing sum of cash.

Mr Ahmed, 30, has sold hundreds of the games but has never seen such a big winner.

He said: "I've had people winning small amounts before but nothing as big as this.

"People have won £50, £70 or £100. When I opened the letter I was surprised. I'm very happy someone has won this kind of money in my shop."

The lucky shop is on the corner of Haxby Road and Walpole Street

The winner has declined publicity, but in a letter sent to the shop, Camelot wrote: "We are delighted to inform you that your store has sold a winning National Lottery ticket.

"In this instance we are unable to give you any further details of the winner or exact prize as they have opted for no publicity.

"All we can reveal is that the win would have taken place approximately three to six months ago.

"The good news is that the winner did agree for you to be informed of your Lucky Shop status and you are free to inform your customers."
