Executive councillor Chris Metcalfe has claimed shopkeepers in Selby town should stop moaning about parking charges.
We have been inundated with emails and letters regarding the councillors comments.
Mr Metcalfe who is a Tadcaster Conservative councillor claimed that shopkeepers in Selby should stop blaming parking charges for the town's decline in retail sales and start pulling their fingers out to stop more shoppers looking towards bigger retail centres such as York and Leeds.
But now residents and traders have hit back and launched a stinging attack on Cllr Metcalfe and the district council for falling to bring in free parking which is enjoyed by motorists in Tadcaster and Sherburn.
Peter Marking-ton 43, of Sherburn said parking prices are an issue in Selby i have friends who don't go there due to having to pay. It is hypocritical of Chris to say that shopkeeprs need to pull their socks up to bring customers in the town when his own town of Tad caster has free parking.
Mary Shilton 82 of Selby said that Parking is a real issue in the town why would customers choose to come to Selby if they can park for free in other places?
The town has seen a swathe of shops close down in the last couple of years. From Clinton Cards to Greenwoods, from the Furniture Store to Jonathon James, the list is endless.
Despite parking fines, the Selby market traders still are still positive, Mike Chambers said the market has been very busy in the last few months and Selby is still an attractive town to visit for local shoppers and visitors further afield.
