Fear not my fellow England fans for it isn't all doom and gloom. Italy was going to be our toughest Match and yes we lost but it was very tight. A 2-2 draw would have been a fair score. We can beat Uruguay and Costa Rica which would give us 6 points and ensure we progress out of the group.
But a draw against Uruguay and a win against Costa Rica would also be enough if Italy beat Uruguay and Costa Rica, or if Italy beat one of them and drew against another and our goal difference was superior to whoever Italy drew against.
We could also progress if we lost to Uruguay and beat Costa Rica, but Italy would have to beat both Uruguay and Costa Rica and England would have to have a superior goal difference to both Uruguay and Costa Rica as we would all have 3 points.
However, if we lose to Costa Rica we've had it, unless Costa Rica and Uruguay both beat Italy and we beat Uruguay and have a superior goal difference to Italy and Uruguay.
Not confusing at all.
Basically, is it's all to play for! Believe!
Italy proved they are the pass masters completing the highest accuracy ever recorded in a World Cup game since 1966, that being said England also notched up their highest ever pass rate in a world cup game from (1966-2014) reaching 91%
Italy recorded 93.2 per cent passing accuracy during World Cup win against England, the Azzurri completed 561 of their 602 passes and Andrea Pirlo completed 103 of his 108 passes to his team mates, the most so far in a 2014 World Cup match.
35 year old Pirlo showed the world how a veteran midfielder can affect the game with precision passes and tactival positional play.
Ruthless Balotelli cropped up to get the winner for Italy. It is rumoured he could be returning to premier league action next season,
Overall the positives for England was a masterclass attacking performance from Stirling, Stirling showed no fear as he darted into the Italian back four. Clinical finishing from Sturridge, a rather compact and strong back four and an out of position Rooney putting through the crucial ball on his weaker foot to assist England's only goal. The negatives, Jack Wilshere made no impact on the game when coming on from the bench, Barton was not as prominent down the left wing as Ashley Cole once was. Sloppy final balls could have been improved on. Overall a draw would not have been out of England's Sights. Hodgson commented on BBC that he thought England would have gone on to score a couple of goals after Italy's second, it was not to be. Captain Gerrard had little impact on the game. But still all to play for. Come on England.
