Selby is set to play a major part in the world famous Tour De France 2015 (Tour De Yorkshire).  International eyes will be upon Selby has our town has been chosen to host a stage of the start or finish of the race in 2015, Le Tour Yorkshire. More plans will be revealed shortly.  So will Selby be awash with yellow bicycles, flags and chanting spectators, we think so...  Selby played a great part during the Olympic Torch route in 2012 and we are hoping that our great town will play a great part in hosting the Tour De Yorkshire with the worlds eyes watching.    SOME KEY FACTS AND FIGURES ON THE WORLD'S LARGEST ANNUAL SPORTING EVENT  The Tour de France is the world's largest annual sporting event - It starts at the end of June/beginning of July and lasts 3 weeks  The entire race covers approximately 3,500 kms - The Grand Départ is the opening of the race of the Tour de France  The Grand Départ is regularly held outside of France - in 2012 it was hosted by Belgium - A worldwide television audience of 3.5billion people watch the Tour de France annually  Over 188 countries around the world broadcast the Tour de France - 121 different television channels across the world show the race every year  There are 4,700 hours of TV coverage annually - The last hour of every stage is broadcast live across western Europe  2,000 journalists representing dozens of nationalities attend the Tour every year - 1,200 hotel rooms are reserved each night for the teams, staff, press and tour personnel  The Tour de France attracts 12 million spectators along the route in a typical year's race     Selby town council bid a sum of approximately £100,000 to host part of the race in Selby. More than 3 million people turned out to see the Tour de France in  the streets of Yorkshire this summer. It has been said by local government and event organisers that it brought over £100Million to the Yorkshire economy. Organisers in Selby are thrilled with the news that Selby is set to take part and have stated that is is a huge boost for our town.

He stated that he is delighted that the bid on behalf of Selby to host a stage of this huge sporting event has been successful. He spoke of the success of the Grand Départ 2014. Selby District is about to be set on the world map.   "The economic and cultural benefits for the district could be enormous and I am keen to see as many parts of the district as possible to get involved with the route."  Also the Mayor of Selby, Rosie Corrigan, Labour, STC Selby West stated that she is thrilled by the fantastic news that Tour De Yorkshire is coming through Selby. It's a brilliant opportunity to showcase what our historically rich and vibrant town has to offer and will be a wonderful experience for local people young and old."
