Hundreds flock to busiest ever candlelight carol service at Selby Abbey
Extra chairs had to be laid out last minute as over 700 people attended this evenings carols by candlelight at the Selby Abbey. The people of Selby all sat close holding there individual lit candle supplied by the Abbey whilst singing carols and enjoying selected readings.
Special Guests included Conservative MP Nigel Adams, Labours town Mayor Rosie Corrigan, Mary Weastell chief executive of Selby Council, John Cattanach chairman of Selby District council.
Hymns that were sang included O Little town of Bethlehem, The first Noel, O come all ye faithful, Hark the Herald Angles Sing, Angels from the Realm of Glory, It came upon the midnight clear and Once in Royal Davids City.
Charlie Forbes Adam high steward, Karleena Watling, rev Julie Wastson,Selby Abbey Charister, John Wright Selby Abbey bell ringer also read biblical christmas readings. The service was led by John Weetman vicar of Selby.
The service was ended with mulled wine and mince pies.
Thanks to everyone who attended the service, for everyone there it was a special town showcasing everything great about Selby. Vicar John Weetman was delighted and overwhelmed by the turn out. The large Abbey was completely full.
